I am picking up from last week’s writing.
Hours later, he returned. He picked up my chart. While signing it, he said, “It wouldn’t have mattered to me if you came in a gray slab; you can go now.”
Over the next few days of recovery, I happened to do something I never did: I read the classifieds. There was a tiny ad that caught my eye.
Building for Sale. New Glasgow. Phone Number.
Could this be the building? The one I always seemed to get stuck at when hitchhiking from the beach to town. The one on the side of the river, where I would sit and watch geese and clouds. It was 9:30 at night, but I had to call. Rollie, the owner, answered the phone and let me know that, indeed, it was the building next to the river.
It took a few months to finish the sale, but we bought it.
The photo above is what it looked like the day we did it on October 26, 1987.
And Life was never the same.
We grew from 4 employees to nearly 100, created great products, built the Gardens of Hope, won several awards, survived financial crises and made a cadre of fans and life-long friends.
Through this experience and the journey of living, I realized almost everything that happens can be filtered through a word that starts with D; hence, you are reading Life According to D. And thank you for being here.
When you look at a gravestone, there are usually two dates, one being the year born and the other the year deceased. Life happens in the Dash.
We sold it on March 31, 2022.
You can take a peek at it now.
